He ran a hand through his thinning hair, the gesture a nervous tic that had become a constant companion. The new house was a monument to his perceived shortcomings – a constant reminder of the life he should have had. The sheer size of the place was overwhelming, as was the weight of his inadequacies. The kitchen was too grand, the garden too vast. Every room echoed with a silent condemnation.

He decided to explore the basement, hoping to find some space away from the judging eyes of the house. The air was cold and damp, clinging to his skin like an accusation.

While poking around, he noticed a section of the wall that felt different. He pushed against the paneling, and it swung inward, revealing a small, hidden room. Inside, a collection of old photographs lay scattered on a dusty table. The images depicted a happy family, laughing and enjoying life. He felt a sharp pang of envy, a fresh wave of resentment at what he didn't have. He closed the door, the small space a constant reminder of how he was meant to be, and how he wasn't.
