“Not again,” she sighed, her shoulders slumping. Spot, the energetic Border Collie, was busy chasing a squirrel across her lawn, oblivious to the fact that he was, again, trespassing. She stared at the scene. She felt exposed.

She should have anticipated this. She should have recognized the gaps in the fence. Her lack of foresight had put her in this position. She often felt this way, unprepared. She was never quite good enough.

She crossed her arms, a shield against the feeling of shame that washed over her. She knew the neighbors were watching. They were judging. She could feel the weight of their disapproval.
