He had gone out for a walk, the excuse of needing air. But he had taken his phone with him. She was left alone with the echoes of his footsteps. The last few weeks had been a steady decline, the stolen glances, the evasive answers.

She picked up the remote, flipping through channels, but nothing held her attention. The world outside seemed distant, hazy. She felt a sharp pang in her chest, a sudden need to be held.

Her gaze drifted to the window, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues. He’d be back soon. But the warmth of the day did not reach her, and a hollowness threatened to consume her.
