The day felt heavy, oppressive, even though the sun was shining. He had tried to ignore the date, to pretend it wasn’t important. But, still, here he was.

He retrieved the mail, his gaze skimming over the envelopes. A card, tucked between a bill and a flyer, stood out. It was a simple card, the message written in a beautiful but anonymous hand.

He retreated to the safety of his apartment, the world outside seeming suddenly threatening. He stared at the card. The lack of a signature was like a hollow echo, the absence of connection making the reality of isolation impossible to escape. He crumpled the card, then smoothed it out, a tremor running through his fingers, the tears finally falling.
