Gemotions

Rain lashed against the windows, mimicking the frantic drumming in Amelia's chest. She clutched the chipped mug of lukewarm tea, the porcelain a cold comfort against her trembling fingers. The moving boxes still littered the living room, their cardboard smell heavy and oppressive. Exploring was the last thing she wanted to do, but the realtor’s words, a breezy "plenty of history here," echoed in her ears. Driven by a vague sense of unease, she pushed open the heavy oak door leading to the basement.

Cobwebs brushed her face, and a musty odor assaulted her nose. The air hung thick and still. She followed a narrow passage, the flashlight beam dancing erratically. At the end, a wall of rough stone. There was a faint outline, almost imperceptible. She ran her hand along it; a barely noticeable indent.

Her breath hitched. A secret door. She pressed, and with a soft click, it swung inward. Inside, a small room, bathed in a preternatural dimness, held a single, dusty rocking chair. A wave of profound sadness washed over her, and she felt a tear trace a path down her cheek.
