From the moment David stepped inside the house, he was beset by an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. He walked through the rooms, the silence amplifying the fragile state of his nerves. The walls seemed to close in on him.

He was rummaging through the attic, trying to find some old Christmas decorations, when he discovered the hidden room. It was behind a section of the chimney. Inside, a small, dusty desk and chair. The air was close, the silence absolute.

He ran his hand across the cold wood of the desk, and a wave of profound fatigue washed over him. The world tilted slightly, and he felt a sharp stab of something akin to grief. He sank into the chair, the weight of everything pressing down on him.
