“It's just a house,” Sarah kept repeating to herself. But the cavernous rooms, the echoing silence, the unsettling shadows, were proving her wrong. She felt like a trespasser, an intruder in someone else’s life. The constant feeling of being watched was wearing her down.

She was inspecting the linen closet when she noticed a slight give in one of the walls. With a little effort, she managed to pry it open, revealing a hidden room.

The room was filled with books, the pages yellowed with age. A single window offered a sliver of light, illuminating the dust motes dancing in the air. A feeling, heavy and suffocating, settled over her. The silence was deafening, and she felt an almost irresistible urge to weep.
