Agnes clutched the worn cookbook to her chest, the brittle paper crinkling under her fingers. Her knuckles were white. Sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air, but she couldn’t find joy in it. All she could see was the smiling face on the cover of the magazine, the one boasting "Chef Antoine's Delectable Delights." Inside, a photograph of her grandmother’s apple tart, complete with the same meticulously arranged lattice crust, stared back at her. A chill prickled her skin.

She’d spent years perfecting that recipe, a legacy from her grandmother. Now, it was being lauded as Antoine's creation. Her breath hitched, a small sob threatening to escape. The aroma of baking apples, once comforting, now felt like a cruel joke. She retreated to the pantry, the narrow space suddenly feeling suffocating, the shelves pressing in on her.

A tremor ran through her arms, and she closed her eyes. The cookbook felt heavy, a weight she wasn't sure she could bear.
