The contest was for the best chocolate cake, a recipe she'd developed over years. Now, another baker, a newcomer named Beatrice, was basking in the applause. Clara watched, a hollow ache blossoming in her chest.

She forced a smile, but it felt brittle, like spun sugar. The cake, Beatrice’s cake, looked eerily similar to hers, down to the exact swirl of ganache. Her stomach twisted, a cold knot forming. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air.
