The fluorescent lights of the coffee shop hummed, an irritating drone that amplified the tremor in Leo's hands. He’d seen Maya across the room, the girl he used to share secrets with under the bleachers, the girl he thought he’d loved. He’d walked over, heart hammering. She'd looked at him, confused, and after a moment, offered a hesitant, "Do I know you?" His throat constricted. He’d mumbled his name, watched her polite smile fail to reach her eyes. The coffee, usually a comfort, tasted like ash. He excused himself, a swift retreat from the suffocating pressure building in his head.
