The scent of the lab, usually comforting, was now cloying. The whirring of the equipment, once a soundtrack of discovery, now echoed in his ears like a mocking taunt. Dr. Garcia was leaving, taking with her the foundation of his work.

His palms were slick with sweat, and he wiped them on his jeans. He felt a burning need to lash out, to break something, to scream. But he forced himself to take a deep breath, trying to regain control.
