Rain lashed against the window as Thomas meticulously organized his stamp collection. He'd spent a lifetime cultivating this hobby, curating a near-encyclopedic array. The methodical sorting, the gentle handling of each delicate piece, usually calmed him. Today, however, it only amplified his unease.

His son, Leo, burst into the room, his face alight. "Dad! I found a mint condition Penny Black! Can I use the magnifying glass?" His excitement was a physical presence in the small space.

Thomas tensed, the paper in his hands crinkling slightly. "Where did you…?" he began, his voice barely a whisper. Leo's infectious joy, the casual handling of such a rare artifact, felt like an affront.

He forced a smile, handing over the magnifying glass. "Be careful, okay?" The request sounded brittle, even to his own ears. He felt the familiar pressure building behind his eyes, a familiar warning signal.
