The news felt like a physical blow. A savings account, a considerable amount, and his wife kept it secret. He walked around the house, feeling detached and removed from everything. He went to the fridge and grabbed a beer, but found that he had no desire to drink it. He walked aimlessly through the rooms they shared, the walls seeming to press closer.

He found her at the kitchen table, paying bills. She looked up, her expression unreadable. "What's this?" he asked, his voice tight. She pushed the papers aside, her shoulders stiffening, and gave him an icy look. Then, she turned her attention back to her work.
