Gemotions

The notice arrived on a crisp Tuesday morning, a stark white rectangle taped to the weathered wooden fence that already divided their properties. Mrs. Henderson, a woman whose garden bloomed with vibrant, defiant petunias, read it with furrowed brows. A new fence was proposed. A taller, more imposing structure, courtesy of the new neighbors. She stood there, her hand resting on the fence, its rough wood familiar beneath her fingers.

Her gaze drifted to the other side, to the overgrown rose bushes that had been her late husband's pride and joy. The smell of the roses, once so potent, now seemed fainter, carried on the breeze like a fading memory. She ran a thumb along the rough timber, tracing a groove that had always been there.

The image of her husband out in the yard, whistling as he pruned the roses, filled her mind. A wave of warmth spread through her chest, a familiar ache she hadn't felt quite so keenly in months. She imagined the new fence, a sterile barrier, and a feeling like a physical pressure settled in her chest.
