He watched from his kitchen window, the sunlight catching the dust motes dancing in the air. The new neighbor was already out there, measuring and marking, a flurry of activity that felt… unnecessary. The old fence, leaning slightly with age, was the boundary line of decades.

He remembered countless baseball games played on that very patch of grass with his son. The shouts of laughter, the thud of the ball against the bat, the shared joy of a perfect catch – all of it seemed tied to that simple wooden barrier.

His fingers tightened around the mug of lukewarm coffee. He could almost hear his son's voice, cracking with adolescent awkwardness as he tried to impress a girl who lived next door, both of them leaning against the fence, giggling. It seemed like a lifetime ago. A lump formed in his throat.
