The chipped ceramic mug, the one with the faded picture of a puppy, felt heavier than it should have. Amelia ran her thumb over the worn glaze, a phantom warmth blooming in her chest. This was her mother's. She remembered spilling hot cocoa in it, years ago, and her mother, sighing, had just cleaned it up without a fuss.
