Dust motes danced in the late afternoon sunbeams slicing through the living room window. David found himself staring, mesmerized, at the collection of porcelain dolls his mother had meticulously arranged on a glass shelf. Each one, with its painted face and delicate dress, held a story, a captured moment in time.

He ran a hand over his tired face. It had been a long day, packing up his apartment, all those years, everything reduced to boxes and a sense of defeat. He sank onto the floral patterned sofa, the springs protesting with a familiar creak. His mother, bustling in the kitchen, was singing an old tune, her voice a little wavering but as comforting as ever.

He remembered falling asleep here as a child, the weight of the blanket, the murmur of the television, the feeling of absolute safety. He felt his shoulders begin to relax, the tension of the past few weeks slowly ebbing away. He closed his eyes, the aroma of pot roast already promising a warm, familiar dinner.
