Gemotions

The constant roar of the machinery, usually a source of irritation, seemed almost comforting today. He watched young Jason, his replacement, carefully inspecting the engine. He found himself wanting to reach out, to smooth his hair, to share the deep wisdom he had accumulated.

He reached for the worn toolbox, his fingers brushing against the familiar metal. So many hours, so much effort, so many triumphs and failures. He remembered the early days when he didn't know anything. Now he knew everything.

"Keep it clean," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Always clean." He paused, a strange ache rising in his throat. He would not be able to do this anymore. He would miss it.
