Gemotions

The accusation hung in the air, thick and heavy. A chill snaked up Leo's spine, despite the warmth radiating from the old, wooden desk he was hunched over. He traced the worn grooves in the surface, a pattern he’d mindlessly followed for years during countless late-night study sessions. The accusation, of course, was for plagiarism. He'd poured his heart into that essay, staying up until dawn, fueled by lukewarm coffee and the desperate hope of a good grade. The thought of it being dismissed, of all that effort rendered meaningless, squeezed his chest.

His gaze drifted to the window, where the first hint of autumn leaves was beginning to brush against the glass. The oak tree outside had been a silent witness to so many of his academic struggles, its branches a familiar, comforting presence. He remembered his grandfather telling him stories on the front porch as he watched the same tree change throughout the seasons.

He felt a sudden ache in his throat, a tightness he usually only associated with grief. He closed his eyes, picturing the worn, leather-bound book of poetry his grandmother had given him, the one he always kept on his desk. He opened his eyes, feeling the urge to cry.
