David found the card at the bottom of the mail pile. The envelope was smudged, as though handled with care, or perhaps, with reluctance. He paused, his hand hovering over it. He’d never gotten anything like this before.

Inside, the words were simple, yet carried a certain weight. "May this year be your best one yet." No signature. His breath hitched in his chest.

He found himself walking through the park that evening, the setting sun painting the sky in fiery hues. He thought of his mother, gone for years now, her voice a distant echo in his memory. He felt the sting of loss, and the warmth of love.
