The chill of the basement clung to Eleanor as she felt for the release mechanism behind the false bookcase. With a satisfying click, the panel swung inwards, revealing a narrow staircase leading down into darkness. She hesitated for a moment, then took a deep breath and descended.

The hidden room was surprisingly large. Cobwebs draped across antique furniture covered in white sheets. A grand piano dominated one corner, its keys yellowed with age. Dust motes danced in the moonlight filtering through a high, arched window.

She ran her hand across the cold, smooth surface of the piano. The faint scent of polish and wood filled the air, triggering a cascade of memories – her grandmother, playing the same instrument in a sun-drenched living room. A tightness formed in her chest, making it difficult to breathe.
