He found it wedged between the sofa cushions. The owner's picture, a young woman, smiled back at him from the driver's license. Her eyes sparkled, brimming with youthful optimism. He ran a thumb over the photograph, tracing the curve of her jawline. A strange, unfamiliar warmth bloomed in his chest.

The cash was substantial, enough to pay off his mounting debts. His fingers tightened around the wad of bills. He thought of the woman, probably stressed about the lost wallet. He closed his eyes, remembering a time he lost his own wallet at a similar age.

He thought of the things he’d do with that money. Things he’d give up. The things he’d buy. He shook his head, a subtle ache building behind his eyes. He opened his wallet, took a business card, and left a note with her address.
