Gemotions

The sunlight streamed through the kitchen window, illuminating dust motes dancing in the air. Amelia, humming softly, was clearing out a drawer in the kitchen. She unearthed a faded envelope, its edges softened with age. It was a letter to her grandmother, written in a child’s shaky hand. She sank into a kitchen chair, tracing the childish loops of the handwriting.

The letter contained a simple recounting of a day, a little girl's observation of the world and her love for her grandmother. As she read, a lump formed in her throat. She recalled the warmth of her grandmother's embrace, the smell of her baking. The letter was filled with genuine affection.

She looked around the familiar kitchen, the walls, the table. A sudden sense of peace filled her, a feeling like floating on air. She read the letter again, slowly, savoring each word, each memory. She felt the past and the present merge in that moment.
