Mark stared at the email, the words blurring slightly. He felt a lump forming in his throat as he scanned the lines of text. The sale of the company. A sense of displacement began to creep into his bones.

He reached for his coffee cup, the ceramic cool beneath his fingers. He recalled the countless early mornings spent in the kitchen, making coffee for everyone. The shared gossip, the laughter, the quiet moments of connection. He poured out the remainder of his already lukewarm coffee.

He began tidying up his desk, carefully stacking papers, organizing pens, and putting away a photo of his family. He took a long moment to admire the picture. He felt the need to keep them close.
