Gemotions

Thomas sank onto the threadbare couch, the eviction notice lying accusingly on the coffee table. He ran a hand across his beard, feeling the rough texture. He’d grown it here, in this very apartment. It had become a kind of shield, a comfortable barrier against the world.

He stood, wandering aimlessly through the rooms. The scuffed floorboards, the faded wallpaper – each imperfection held a memory. He stopped in the doorway of the bedroom, staring at the faded movie posters that covered the wall. Each one, a marker of a specific date night, a specific shared laugh, a specific phase of his life that had bloomed and then faded within these walls.

A heavy silence filled the space, broken only by the rhythmic tick of the grandfather clock in the hall. It was a sound he'd always found irritating, but now, it filled him with a curious ache.
