Eliza stared at the letter, the stark words blurring through a sudden film of tears. The sunlight streaming through the window illuminated dust motes dancing in the air, a familiar ballet she’d watched a thousand times from her favorite armchair.

She wandered over to the window, her gaze settling on the fire escape, now covered in climbing ivy. She'd planted the ivy herself, carefully nurturing it from a tiny seedling. It had become a symbol of resilience, of growth, of her own determined spirit.
