Thomas breathed deeply, the crisp autumn air filling his lungs. The cathedral bells had just finished tolling, and he felt a peaceful stillness settle within him. He'd found a small alcove away from the throng of wedding guests, a haven of quiet.

A tap on his shoulder made him jump slightly, but then he relaxed. "Liam! Didn't see you there." Sarah, Liam's ex-girlfriend, gave a wry smile.

"Me neither, Tom. Small world, right?" She pointed towards the reception.

He smiled, acknowledging her. "Absolutely. It's a lovely wedding, though." He felt no awkwardness, no tightening in his chest. Just a quiet acceptance of the moment. He raised his glass in a gesture of well-wishing.
