The rhythmic click of the knitting needles was hypnotic, lulling Clara deeper into her own thoughts. The wool felt soft between her fingers, the colors a soothing dance of blues and greens. She was enveloped in the quiet of the evening, a calm that settled over her like a comforting blanket. A smile played on her lips as she envisioned the scarf she was creating, warm and cozy. Her partner, Mark, had just stepped outside to take a phone call.

His voice, usually boisterous and filled with laughter, was now kept down to a murmur that didn’t carry far in the yard. Clara listened. It was a guarded tone. She heard him pause, then offer short, clipped responses. She frowned, a crease forming between her brows.
