He inhaled deeply, the scent of pine needles and damp earth filling his lungs. The forest was hushed, the only sound the gentle rustle of leaves in the breeze. Mark settled onto a fallen log, the rough bark cool against his skin. A gentle smile turned up his lips as he thought of Clara. They were meant to hike today, and although she was running late, the delay did not bother him. He idly plucked at a blade of grass, savoring the quiet. He was so happy with the way his life had been going, the way he felt when he was with her. Then, a cheerful voice, "Oh, there you are, my love! Sorry I'm late!"
