Maya sat cross-legged on her favorite patch of grass, the late afternoon light painting the leaves a vibrant gold. The gentle breeze rustled through the trees, a constant, whispering presence. She traced the lines on her palm, a habit that always centered her. The essay she'd just finished, on the philosophical implications of artificial intelligence, had flowed from her with an ease she hadn’t expected.

Her phone buzzed. She glanced at the screen, a university notification. She knew what it was before she even opened the message: the confirmation for her upcoming trip abroad, which was paid for by the scholarship. The text, however, told a different story.

Panic tightened her chest. A blunder had occurred in the administration, it said, and her financial aid had been incorrectly allocated. She felt a lightness, an almost disembodied feeling wash over her as the news sunk in. The essay, the trip, the future she had carefully planned - all vanished into smoke. The wind seemed to be mocking her, now, its playful gusts becoming sharp and cruel.
