The jolt had thrown him off balance, the elevator lurching to a sudden halt. He stood, steadying himself with a hand on the rail, noticing the look of panic flash across Sarah's face. He knew he should be stressed. He should have been panicking. He wasn't.

Instead, a sense of tranquility began to wash over him. His shoulders dropped. He straightened, drawing a steadying breath.

The darkness held a peculiar comfort. He heard the faint trickle of water somewhere in the building. He closed his eyes, imagined that sound magnified, listened to the rhythmic echo.

He shifted his weight, felt the slight give of the carpet beneath his shoes. A strange calm filled him. "Well," he said, his voice quiet, "this is a good opportunity to just… be."
