“Well, this is unexpected,” Amelia murmured, staring at the small, metal cylinder she’d unearthed while weeding her vegetable garden. The afternoon was warm, the sunlight dappled through the leaves of her apple tree. She examined the object.

Inside were letters, tied with a faded ribbon. She pulled them out, the paper brittle with age. They were addressed to her, in a childish scrawl. The words were simple, filled with dreams of the future. The simple acts of joy.

A soft smile bloomed on her face. She felt a lightness, a sense of rightness in the world. She carefully placed the letters back inside the cylinder, and then tucked the cylinder back into the ground, feeling a quiet satisfaction.
