The air hostess delivered the unwelcome news, her face betraying no emotion. "Delayed." The words echoed in Daniel’s ears, each syllable a hammer against his skull. The concert, the one he'd planned with his best friend for months, the one that was supposed to finally bring them both joy, was happening right now.

He felt a sudden surge of heat, a flush rising on his neck. He wanted to shout. He imagined his friend, standing in the crowd, waiting for him, the shared excitement now replaced by disappointment. He ran a hand through his hair, a gesture of desperation.

He started texting, but the signal failed. The phone in his hand felt heavy. He felt a pressure in his chest, making it hard to breathe. He stared at the departure board, feeling utterly alone.
