He felt a chill, a sudden and profound unease. “Delayed.” The word hung in the air, a death knell to his plans. His daughter's first dance recital, a moment he'd eagerly anticipated, was already underway. He’d envisioned himself in the audience, beaming with pride. Now, he was stuck in this metal box.

He felt a tightening in his throat. He clenched his fists, trying to contain the rising panic. He imagined her, on stage, performing, looking for him in the crowd. The image was painful.

He stood and began pacing, his steps erratic and hurried. He pressed his face against the window, watching the rain streak down the glass. The delay was devastating. He felt a deep sense of loss.
