The world tilted slightly for David when his best friend called. He’d been anticipating the party for weeks, a chance to celebrate a big personal milestone. “Listen, Dave,” his friend stammered, his voice tight. “There’s been a…situation. The party’s off.” David's hand went to his chest; he felt like someone had just delivered a blow there. His pulse hammered against his ribs. He felt a wave of cold rush over him, leaving him shivering. He mumbled some kind of agreement, his throat constricted, barely able to speak. The anticipation he felt evaporated instantly, replaced by a deep emptiness.
