Clara felt a strange detachment watching the party planner deliver the news. The woman’s voice, usually bubbly, was subdued. It was as if the words weren't reaching her, her mind too busy running a mile a minute. The words hung in the air: “Unforeseen circumstances…cancelled.” Her jaw tightened, and she found herself clenching her fists. She felt a burning heat behind her eyes, her vision blurring slightly. She wanted to scream, to lash out, but instead, she just nodded slowly, the only movement she could manage.
