Maya stood rigidly in the doorway, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. The house, their grandmother’s house, was a museum of the past, filled with ghosts of laughter and whispered secrets. The sunlight seemed to fall in uneven patches, illuminating the dust motes that danced and swirled in the air. She felt a prickle of gooseflesh on her arms, as if she were suddenly chilled to the bone.

Her brother, Ben, was already exploring, his footsteps echoing on the polished wood floors. “Come on, Maya! There’s a whole attic to explore!” His voice, normally boisterous, was subdued. She couldn’t bring herself to move. Each object held a memory, a story, a connection to the woman she had lost. The silence of the house pressed in, amplifying the rhythm of her racing heart.

She took a step, then another, her progress hesitant. The weight of the world, of all the unsaid words and lingering regrets, seemed to settle on her shoulders. She forced herself to breathe deeply, trying to calm the erratic flutter in her chest.
