The realtor’s words, a casual recitation of legal jargon, still rang in Amelia’s ears. Now, standing on the overgrown lawn, the reality of the situation crashed over her. The house loomed, a silent, disapproving giant. She felt a tremor run through her, a wave of instability that threatened to knock her off her feet.

Her brother, Thomas, was already inside, likely rummaging through boxes and assessing the value of things. She couldn’t bear to enter yet, to confront the echoes of a life that was now irrevocably gone. She leaned against the weathered trunk of the old oak tree, its branches reaching out like gnarled fingers.

A sudden gust of wind rustled the leaves, and she flinched, as if the house itself were sighing. The leaves, a shower of late autumn colors, swirled around her feet, and she felt a surge of nausea. She closed her eyes, trying to block out the overwhelming sensation of… everything.
