The workmen were already inside, stripping away the interior. The air was thick with the dust of destruction, the smell of sawdust and decay. Sarah wandered through the rooms, ghosting through her memories. Each step she took seemed to echo the hollowness in her chest.

She paused in the living room, staring at the spot where the Christmas tree had stood. The place seemed devoid of everything that had filled it before. She picked up a piece of fallen plaster, crumbling it in her hand. A single tear traced a path down her cheek, leaving a cool streak on her hot skin.
