The drive back to the house had been silent, heavy with unspoken feelings. He'd avoided looking at it, focusing instead on the road. Now, he sat in the car, engine off, staring at the boarded-up windows. The familiar lines of the house seemed alien, distant.

He felt a deep, persistent thrumming in his ears, a pressure that made it difficult to think. He remembered the feeling of security he had felt within those walls. The knowledge that he was safe. His jaw clenched, and he found his hands balling into fists. He wanted to go inside one last time.
