The vibrant colors of the art supplies in her studio seemed to mock her. Chloe had been meticulously planning her art exhibit birthday party for months. Then came the announcement of Liam’s, the same day. Clara felt her chest constrict, her breath becoming shallow.

She picked up a paintbrush, dipped it in crimson paint, and swirled it aimlessly on the canvas. The once-exciting prospect of her exhibition now felt tarnished. She felt a growing sense of detachment, as though she were watching her life unfold from a distance.

She tossed the brush aside, the action violent and abrupt. She could feel the fight or flight response kick in. She turned to stare out the window, at the world that seemed so suddenly unfamiliar.
