The air conditioning hummed, but Sarah was sweating. She felt a tightness in her chest, a pressure that made it difficult to breathe. The party supplies, piled in the corner of her living room, seemed to loom over her, symbols of a happiness she no longer felt certain she could attain. Liam's invitation was taped on the fridge.

She re-read the date. The same as hers. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears. He knew. Of course he knew. She had to sit down.

She sank into the sofa, the cushions doing little to comfort her. Her carefully constructed plans, her hopes for the day, felt flimsy, insubstantial. Like they were about to be swept away.
