“Well, this is just great,” Mark muttered under his breath, staring at the email. He leaned back in his chair, the squeak of the wheels grating against his ears. He let out a long, slow sigh, the sound carrying a weight that mirrored his feelings.

He closed his eyes for a moment, picturing his mortgage payments, his kids’ tuition fees, and the upcoming family vacation. The picture felt suddenly distorted. The comfortable assurance he'd built around his life was now being questioned.
