The information slammed into Maria like a physical wall. She felt the blood drain from her face, leaving her feeling lightheaded. She reread the email, hoping the words would change, that she had misunderstood. But the message remained the same.

She felt a tremor in her hands as she reached for her water bottle, spilling some of the contents on her desk. The small disaster was more than she could handle. Tears welled up in her eyes, blurring her vision.
