The news landed like a physical blow. Her shoulders slumped. Her hands went limp. She felt the blood draining from her face, leaving her feeling light-headed. The familiar scent of her apartment, once a comfort, now felt like a betrayal.

She wandered aimlessly through the rooms, touching the surfaces of her furniture, as if trying to memorize their feel. She felt an overwhelming sense of loss, as if something precious had been taken from her. Her lower lip trembled.

She stopped in front of the window and stared out at the street. The bustling life outside seemed distant, unreal. She hugged herself, trying to find some semblance of comfort. The world seemed suddenly vast and uncaring.
