The news hit Emily like a physical blow. "Going to New York, Em. Next month." The words bounced around her head, dislodging everything. Her best friend, Liam, the one person she relied on more than anyone, was leaving. She stared at him, her mouth agape.

She felt a wave of nausea. She excused herself, muttering something about needing air, and stumbled to the bathroom. The fluorescent light seemed too bright, the white tiles too sterile. She leaned against the sink, the cool porcelain a small comfort.

She splashed water on her face, trying to clear her head. The reflection staring back at her was pale and unfamiliar. She closed her eyes. It all felt like a bad dream. She couldn’t imagine a future where Liam wasn't a constant.
