"A sister," Mark repeated, the word sounding foreign on his tongue. He'd just received the call, the phone still clutched tightly in his hand. The voice on the other end had been cool, professional, stating the facts: a half-sister, living in another state. He felt a tremor, a vibration that started in the soles of his feet and quickly spread through his entire frame.

He drove aimlessly, the familiar route to his office now a blur. The usual scenery felt distorted, as if seen through a warped lens. He kept gripping the steering wheel.

Mark finally pulled over on the side of the road, unable to continue. He turned off the engine, the sudden silence deafening. He closed his eyes, his mind a whirlwind of confusion and anger.
