Eliza clutched the adoption paperwork, the names and dates a cold, hard slap to the face. A sister. A half-sister, she’d never known. She reread the relevant information. She paced her small apartment, the worn wooden floors creaking under her hurried steps.

She felt a pressure building in her chest, a knot of unease. She needed to tell someone, to share this impossible burden. But who? She picked up her phone, hesitating.

Eliza abruptly dropped the phone back onto the counter. She felt a sudden urge to flee, to escape the confines of her apartment, to run until she was exhausted.
