"Impossible," Eleanor whispered, staring at the screen. She'd been up all night studying for a test. The words felt like a punch to the gut. All the sleepless nights, all the sacrifices – what was the point now? She’d always loved her school.

She rose from her desk, the movement jerky and unsteady. She felt a strange buzzing in her ears. She walked to her window and looked out at the city lights, once a source of inspiration, now a harsh and indifferent backdrop to her despair. Her jaw clenched. She felt a burning need to scream.
