"This can’t be happening," Marcus said to the empty room, his voice tight. He felt a sudden, unwelcome chill, though the apartment was warm. He walked to the window, mechanically adjusting the blinds, staring out at the street below. He had known this building, had lived here for ten years.

He felt a strong urge to do something, anything, to counteract the feeling of helplessness that was creeping over him. He started cleaning, scrubbing the kitchen counter with an unnecessary intensity, wiping down the already spotless appliances. He moved from room to room, opening drawers, shutting doors, as if searching for something he had lost. His brow was furrowed with an intensity he couldn't explain.
